A Fellow of CPA Canada, founder and managing partner of Mintz & Partners, a company he grew and merged with Deloitte LLP, and prior to his retirement, Partner and Vice-Chair of Deloitte Canada, Harley has amassed a collection of titles, professional successes and designations that would leave many in awe. Unable to let go, Deloitte retained Harley for 4 additional years post retirement in the role of Senior Business Advisor where he spent time mentoring Deloitte’s new leadership and developing relationships. At the same time, unwilling to put his strategic hat away in favour of golfing full time, Harley formed Minkids Group, a family office active in making real estate investments and private equity investments in Canadian and international private companies.
Recognizable by his enviable, Einstein-like locks, Harley is in fact best known by his clients and colleagues for his 50 years of experience guiding and advising on succession, estate, financial and tax planning matters. Harley thinks big. And he thinks strategically. When you put those two traits together, you have the makings of an pre-eminent business leader and strategic advisor.
Harley has been instrumental in the development of innovative strategies to help transform the businesses and prioritize the philanthropic objectives of some of Canada’s largest and most prominent families. If asked, he will tell you that the key to his success is simple: listen, learn, identify your client’s needs (and wants) and then work with them to solve their problems and meet their professional and personal targets. A frequent commentator in Canadian media, Harley is an undeniable authority and resource on accounting, tax and estate planning issues.
A bio about Harley would not be complete without recognizing some of the many ways he has given back to the community. In 2015, leading the campaign #NoHairSelfie, Harley raised over $725,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation by shaving his trademark locks. He has also served on the board of many charitable organizations including the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Baycrest Centre Foundation and the Reena Foundation.
